First Things First: What's This Actually For?

Have you ever experienced this: You work hard on SEO, write tons of articles, but have no idea what rank your keywords have on Google? Manually searching and checking rankings every day? That's way too tedious.

SerpBear is here to solve this exact pain point. Simply put, it's a little assistant that automatically monitors your keyword rankings for you, and it's completely free and open-source.

On the homepage after logging in, you'll notice a prompt indicating that configuration is missing, and it can't be used yet.

SerpBear uses third-party web scraping tools like ScrapingAnt, ScrapingRobot, or your provided proxy IPs to scrape Google search results, checking if your domain appears in the results for given keywords.

Taking ScrapingAnt as an example, it offers 10,000 free searches per month. You need to register first to get an API key.

Go to https://scrapingant.com to register a user.

After successful registration, you can obtain your API token.

Return to the application, go to Settings, and enter the API token you just obtained.

Click 'Update Settings'. You'll see the red warning prompt at the top has disappeared, and the application is now ready for use.

Remember these tips when adding keywords:

  • Start with Core Terms: Begin by adding the 10-20 most important keywords.
  • Manage by Category: Use tags to group your keywords.
  • Focus on Long-Tail Keywords: Don't forget those longer, often higher-converting long-tail keywords.

Integrate Google Tools (Optional but Recommended)

  • Google Search Console Integration: Allows you to see actual click and impression data.
  • Google Ads Integration: Get keyword search volume data for keyword research.

Summary

SerpBear's biggest advantages are that it's free, simple, and sufficient. While the interface might not be as flashy as paid tools, and its features not as comprehensive as Semrush, it's perfectly adequate for most individual website owners and small businesses.

It scrapes actual Google search results, so the accuracy is decent. However, rankings themselves are dynamic and can vary by region and time.

The biggest fear in SEO is working hard without knowing the results. With this little assistant, you can at least clearly see if your efforts are paying off.
