Bonsai Experience: A Home Wiki Engine/Photo Album

Have you ever had this experience: while flipping through old photos, you suddenly can't remember who someone is, or you want to tell your children stories about their grandparents, only to realize you remember fewer and fewer details?

The open-source project Bonsai recommended today was born to solve this problem.

What is Bonsai?

Simply put, Bonsai is a self-hosted family wiki system. You can think of it as:

  • 📖 A family tree that will never get lost
  • 📷 A smart family photo album
  • 📝 A notebook for recording family stories

Practical Guide

After the application is installed, you will be prompted to create an administrator upon first entry.

  1. Add Yourself: First, fill in your own information, including:
    • Basic info (name, birthday, gender)
    • Upload a profile picture
    • Write a short self-introduction

  1. Add Family Members: Gradually add parents, spouse, children, etc.
  2. Establish Relationships: The system automatically validates relationship logic. For example, if you set a father-son relationship, the system will automatically deduce other relationships.

Uploading and Organizing Photos

This is one of Bonsai's most practical features: Bulk Upload Photos: Drag and drop files directly onto the page.

Tag People: Click on a face in the photo and select the corresponding family member. Add Descriptions: Write down the time, place, and what happened for each photo.

Final Words

Unlike those complex genealogy software, Bonsai is designed for ordinary families:

  • Simple interface, easy for the elderly and children to use.

Through recording and organizing, you will discover:

  • Those stories you almost forgot become vivid again.
  • Every family gathering becomes a great opportunity for "historical data collection."

Bonsai is not just a software tool; it's a change in lifestyle.
